At the electronics expo CES, which recently took place in Las Vegas, urine was a perhaps somewhat unexpected theme.
Several manufacturers presented products that could either be hung down in the toilet bowl or that were built into a new toilet seat.
What they have in common is that they can analyze the urine, send the results to a mobile app, and display information about ovulation, pH level, dehydration, and nutritional deficiency among other things.
The manufacturers point out that their products should not be used as a substitute for a doctor's visit. But they can give users information that something might not be right and that it's worth talking to a doctor.
Most products, such as Whiting's Uscan, use reaction paper that is analyzed inside the device. One manufacturer, Olive, on the other hand, has chosen to build a toilet seat that uses LED lights to shine through the urine and perform a spectrographic analysis.
During the autumn, the first products will go on sale in Europe. The prices will vary, but for example, the Whitings Uscan should cost around 500 euros.
